Don J

Real Character . . .

My neighbors have them quite a pet,
That has not quite warmed up to me yet.
He runs in and out of the house all day,
Living a life of nothing but play.

He lives in a catered and frills kinda world,
Which makes for a very interesting squirrel.
His ma and pop love him like he was their own,
Even though he was rescued from baby alone.

I have tried to pet him and be a friend,
But he just runs away to the other end.
He hops in the tree and turns with a jerk,
Looking at me with the oddest of smirks.

It’s like he mocks me knowing the wish I would say,
I would like to trade places with that squirrel for a day.
I would think he would rather want to be free,
Instead, he lives a life of luxury.

All meals provided, fed by the hand,
This fella ain’t got his head in the sand.
He knows where’s the butter, knows where’s the bread.
He’s tucked in all tight each night in his bed.

He gets primped and pampered and loved every day,
I’m telling you this one has really got it made.
He won’t be like me all sour and down,
With the slightest trouble producing a frown.

This one won’t be living sad in a rut,
He never even has to find him a nut.
Ahh to live this life, to have this world,
I want to be like Don J the squirrel.

Just a Thought

Part truth, part fiction. Yes, there is a real Don J, however, I have not met him personally (yet), so I can only imagine our encounter. I have watched his antics via his parent’s posts on social media and have been thoroughly entertained by each one.

See, social media can show something real, the true character of a squirrel. (Also a lot like social media, while Don J is real, the photo is stock.)

Many of my poems are serious and telling, but this one, reminiscent of my flair for the fun in the poetry of my high school days, just fills the need for something lighter.

Where Art Thou

“Have you seen my tape measure?” asked my husband. “I left it on the table yesterday.” Those few words are all it takes for me to move. I leap up from my desk and march toward the table, launching my mission with confirmation of said item’s absence. I carry a special superhero gene which activates […]
